Are You A Sniper Blogger Or A Gattling Gun Blogger?
Blogging, Contributed, Education & Training, Everything Add comments
Probably the strangest question that you came across in the blogosphere, but really, what are you? No, I don’t mean “Illegal Firearms” here - but a SVD Sniper Gun or a Gattling Cannon can come in handy once in a while?
On the topic, of all the bloggers I see on the blogosphere, there are two types. Yeap! Sniper Bloggers and Gattling bloggers.
Who are sniper bloggers and who are gattling bloggers? The accurate question would be ‘what are sniper bloggers and what are gattling bloggers?’. Well, keeping it simple, niche bloggers and non-niche bloggers. And, so, I gave it away…
Sniper bloggers
Let’s see. Niche bloggers are like snipers but why?
- They expect a kill from every bullet. Every shot is taken with greatest accuracy and greatest caution. They analyze virtually every aspect that could alter their plan; wind speed, target motion, fall-back, etc. Likewise, niche bloggers expect the most from every word they write, gets down the details with the greatest accuracy, analyze all the statistics of failure, and success before moving on to the next step.
- If you call yourself a niche blogger and do not follow the sniper’s code of conduct - “One shot, One kill”, it might be the reason why you can’t seem to get a move on your blog. Every shot must make a kill. Every post must make an impact or at least should be targeted to make an impact.
- Everyone can’t be a niche blogger, much like everyone can’t be a sniper.
Sorry, but that’s the harsh truth! If you want to be a niche blogger, you will have to work hard at it much like the training that a sniper blogger goes through. You must be able to prioritize your mission of blogging to a level that it is considered something ‘important’ in your life. If other bloggers criticize you for being so serious about it, don’t listen to them. After all, not many people understand why a sniper waits 48 hours in one spot to take a single shot. - Snipers can take out someone thousands of meters away. Likewise, niche bloggers can create an impact for a reader that had no previous relation with his or her blog. They can find readers with their incredible accuracy and talent.
- Quality over Quantity - if you’re a niche blogger, prioritizing quality over quantity is a must. It doesn’t matter how frequent you post (of course, must be a acceptable frequency! not once per year!!) if you post ‘em good. Remember, snipers don’t waste too many bullets to get something done. Accuracy of the shot and quality of the post is the key.
- Sniper bloggers are not born. They are made. And before you become a sniper, you’ll have to go through an awkward period of blogging which will seriously make you question your purpose. But sooner or later, you’ll have your shot.
Gattling bloggers
Non-niche blogging is like firing out a gattling cannon. Remember Rambo?
- If you have some muscle, you can pretty much vaporize anything in the battle field. Much like a non-niche blogger can blog about anything happening in this universe, with incredible posting frequencies just like how a gattling cannon can fire a hundred rounds per minute.
You don’t have to aim accurately at your target when you’re firing a gattling cannon. Rather, you can aim near the target and end-up somewhere with it. Likewise, non-niche bloggers don’t have too many specific targets. Most of them blog for fun or expressing themselves, so you can’t expect much from 100 shots fired. Non-niche bloggers can’t expect much exposure for their work.- You can’t possibly kill an antelope 1 mile away with a gattling cannon. A cannon’s area of impact is contained. Non-niche bloggers can achieve so much, but no matter what they do, they will always have a limit to the extent that their blog can grow. And much like a gattling cannon works best for a target immediately around it, non-niche bloggers mostly blog for certain people that they know or had built contacts with. For instance, take personal blogs for example.
- In their early stages, most bloggers tend to be non-niche bloggers. It’s natural. You don’t need much training to hold a gattling cannon trigger. You don’t need much experience to write about something if you’re not trying to be specific about it. You’ll have plenty of bullets to fire, so you’re firing away!
- Non-niche bloggers are highy flexible. They can move their gattling cannon anywhere and keep firing. Since they don’t have a specific niche, they can possibly blog about anything they want.
- Much like gattling cannons can hardly hit the same spot twice, non-niche bloggers can hardly repeat their success. Their sudden traffic spikes are caused due to too many varying reasons. So, a huge success of non-niche blogging is due to too many outside influences, out of their blogging.
Who’s the ultimate winner?
Well, I hate to conclude this with a specific answer. But, in the blogosphere, a niche blogger is more successful than a non-niche blogger. Mainly because a blog should be a sticky web site and niche blogging really paves the way for a sticky web site. Snipers are professionals. They can take out anyone with exploiting the slightest loophole. If you want to hire a hitman (please don’t!), it would rather be someone who doesn’t make a mess of it and keep it down as low as possible right?
Many bloggers make the transition from non-niche blogging to niche blogging everyday. But ultimately, there will always be that perfect balance between gattling cannons and sniper guns in the blogosphere. If you keep a sniper and a gattling gunner 1 mile apart, we can probably imagine who would make it through right? But, not to worry because at least we don’t snipe each other out ![]()

OMG that is an amazing analogy. Never thought of it in those terms, but I’ll be wearing my camo from now on when I blog.
Hi Mike - Great comparison. You make sniper bloggers sounds so ruthless though. Maybe the ones who blog out of their niche aren’t so bad? I even did a meme a couple of days ago.
I agree. Great comparison. Nice read there.
Great analogies Mike, VERY well written post, well done!
heheheh I’m a non-niche blogger - but I don’t care: the more carnage the better! Muahahahahah!! Lovely analogy though
I Read it, I Liked it, I Stumbled it.
Lol, one of the more original posts I’ve read in a while. I’m neither - I’d say I’m an AK-47 blogger (rwarr!!). I’m gonna kill you in 3-4 shots and if I manage to get a headshot, I’ll blow your head clean off (San Andreas anyone?). Sometimes I’ll put the effort in to aim for a head shot and other times I’ll just go on a rampage and blast away and see what I can hit
“Great analogies Mike!” - hehe.
Thanks for the comments guys. Although most of ‘em are not addressed to me. Hehe.. Thanks for putting this up Mike!
@ Cath - Yeap, I wanted to portray ruthless snipers. You got that!
@ Neil - Thank you Neil. Andyeap, Mike thanks you too:)
@ Caroline Middlebrook - Maybe not.. I’ve got too much than you can handle.. AK47 is good.. But you might wanna get an M60.. It’s more accurate.. Hehe! Thanks for commenting:)
Woohoo! I’m a sniper! Matter of fact, if we wasn’t talking about blogging, I’d still be a sniper… in Xbox 360 lol… I’m nasty!

definitly original post a little confusing but original
@fly fishing - Thank MindBlogger for this post

@Cath - Thanks for your comment, but I think you mistaken that this was a guest post
@Neil - Again, thanks for the comment, but I’m sorry, this post was not written by me
@fragileheart - LOL! Carnage brings visitors
@Nasir - Thanks!
@Caroline - You crack me up
At first I thought you played Counter-Strike or something, but San Andreas…HAH!
@Jay - PC all the way!
Guys and Gals, I would like to tell you to please pay attention to the posts that are published here because some are guest posted and I don’t want to take any credit for it. Another thing I would like to add is please use your REAL first and last name when commenting here because I’m starting to get frustrated with people not using their names. Thanks!
Mike…I am not going to use my real first or last name. You should be thankful that people bother to comment at all but instead you scold them like they’re children for not following your rules.
It’s your blog but it rubbed me the wrong way. I doubt I am alone.
Hey Mike, I saw it was a guest post, I was just agreeing that I was a sniper lol…
Oh, and why are you getting frustrated at people not putting their real names? Just curious…

Jay » Most people usually put up different names to lure clicks and I don’t believe in that and consider it more of a spam. I’ve also seen too many of the same names, which are usually “make money online”…
Bill » Of course a lot of people would disagree with me, but I have also disabled my “DO FOLLOW” plugin because of this. It has been getting out of hand. You don’t have to put your last name of course, but a least a first name to call you by. It’s just like if you were to go out to a meeting or a conference. You wouldn’t want to say, “I’m the BLOGPRENEUR” or something like that. If you could leave your first name at the end of the comment, I really don’t understand why not leave it at the top. I hope you understand, but thanks for bringing this point up to me again. I will take this under consideration, but if you run a big blog, these things might bug..
-Mike
Well Mike…maybe when you run a big blog you could let us know how it feels but until then I’d be a bit more humble and gracious to your readers.
I don’t know you but you’re coming off pretty darned arrogant in this thread. As I said, your call.
Bill » I really don’t understand how asking my readers to comment with their name and not a text that wants a “click” is being less humble and less gracious though. Like I mentioned earlier, if you meet someone in person, you wouldn’t go “My name is make money online” or something like that. It’s just a thing I want to make clear that comments should have your name rather than different text. Your name is your image and that is how people remember you by. It’s my call, but you can think and give your opinion on what you want. I don’t want you to leave or anything, but it’s just my way of running my blog
Lol…great analogy, now I gotta go work on being a sniper!
I like to carry both blogging guns. It would be like saying “Kill em all”. I may not like the commenting rules, but I like the post. Thanks mindblogger, and also to you Mike.
(novz)
The thing is, how clear and closely you can sense your targets {?} Killer instinct is important. Weapon is not important nor the attitude, just make yourself alive among dead and keep on climbing to that “post” to be conquer

I wish I can be a sniper blogger.. Hehehe
I am pretty much a sniper. My posts tend to be long and thought out. I can’t make a short post if I try, it just feels like I am not covering the topic fully.
Excellent description of the blogging mindset, I’m a sniper for sure well except when i use a gattlin gun
Phenomenal and most creative yet! You are truly amazing and have this art of blogging down to a science! Bravo!!! Though new to this, I would say I am a sniper because I stick to my passions, and post with my heart overflowing from those passions in hopes to impact anyone who takes the time to read what I have to say! Again, Bravo…you are my mentor!
Hey dude, nice analogy. But you fail muchly. I had to will myself to continue past the first paragraph just because you made one extreme mistake… no fact checking. It is called a “Gatling gun”, and a “SVD sniper rifle”. Your ability to mangle these terms means to me you know nothing about weapons and use the terms just to try and sound cool. Which is so not cool. Next time, dig a bit deeper into the linguistics of your topic or analogy or whatever. Each little error costs you readers, each lost reader is a potential sale lost. Sorry dude, but this one was a misfire.
bravo mike, well done! i luv the analogy, even though it was a “misfire”..hahaha, anyway haterz..i’m a sniper in training, for now, i jux brought a pea shooter to the gunfight, hope i don’t get vaporized!
I think you can fall somewhere in the middle and still be effective. what I have found is that many people just post all over and the majority of their posts are horrible. they literally have no value to the site they are posting on. to me these posters are completely useless and only self promoting.
The key is to be able to actually contribute while at the same time being able to drive people back to your site also. so you have to be prolific and dedicated, BUT ALSO MAKE QUALITY posts. And that means TIME. So I would say it is more like being a calm, cool, intelligent, introspective, sniper, who is willing to sit and wait as long as it takes to get the job done.

Political Disgust
I think that most bloggers are niche bloggers because that way they can be truly useful to their readers. If you are just rambling about a different subject every week with no strings to tie them together then what is the difference between a blog and a pin-up board? I think when it comes down to it… a blogger with a plan and goals will be successful in the end and those who are just aiming everywhere will just waste ammunition.
Great blog. btw.
