Phuket island

The following is a guest post submitted by Matt from Phuket Vogue.

Many of you will have taken, or contemplated taking, the big step of quitting your day job to become a professional blogger. When you do so, the first thing that will cross your mind is whether you can keep yourself afloat with the income you make from blogging. Rent, food bills, partying – you’ll soon start to miss a regular salary if you don’t have a game plan.

I blog from Phuket, which is a large island in South Thailand. I’m British, but moved to Thailand about three years ago. I eat at top restaurants, I get to go to the beach whenever I want, I party at hip nightspots – just doing all the usual things that a 25-year-old does. My monthly expenditure is normally about $800, including rent.

If you’re serious about blogging, there’s something to be said for moving to a country where you can take advantage of your homeland’s relatively strong currency. I moved to Phuket from Bangkok about a year ago. After Phuket, I might head to East Timor or China. Wherever I go, I can continue blogging and earning an income exactly the same as if I were in my home country.

I don’t blog full time because I enjoy my job, which is on a newspaper. However, if I were to pack in my full-time gig, I would actually make more money than I do at the moment – all because of blogging.

Taking the plunge and moving to another country was the greatest decision I ever made. If you can generate an income through blogging, what’s to stop you from taking your show on the road and seeing a bit of the world as you do so? After all, isn’t the point of blogging full time that you have the freedom to do what you want? Surely you don’t want to waste that freedom by just, well, staying at home blogging.

Phuket isn’t for everyone, but there are plenty of places around the world where your money will stretch further than could ever dream of in many Western countries.

So who’s with me? Anyone fancy coming over to Phuket?

Hi Matt - It looks absolutely fabulous and I can definitely understand anyone single moving there. I’m hoping to move to another country but my choices are more limited as I want my kids to go to an english speaking school.

I’ve been to Phuket. It’s beautiful and I had a great time there. Chiang Mai was loads of fun as well. I think taking some time to do what you want to do pre-kids is definitely the way to go. Enjoy it!!!
