gas fumes

Automobiles have been around for a long time now with new designs and concepts coming out every year. I remember how when I was in school, I would see pictures in books of cars that have to be winded up to start. Even back then cars would run on some sort of petroleum and I’m pretty sure before petroleum, cars were running on other types of matter. Reality now shows that a huge percentage of the population in the whole world have some type of automobile transportation that is owned. I’m not talking about public transportation like buses, but rather the cars and motorcycles that you see on the streets and freeways. The reason why a huge population owns a type of transportation is because going to work isn’t just a stroll to the park anymore, but more of a 10-20 mile or more walk. I know there are some crazy people out there that loves to walk far to work to save on some money and the Earth, but most are just commuting through all the traffic. No matter how much gas costs and no matter how much it is hurting the Earth, driving an automobile is just a need in most families these days.

Global Warming: A Scientist’s (rare) Perspective

This guest post has been submitted by Shan of Globally Rational. Please pay his blog a visit if you wish to learn more about the world and polotical events.

The issue of global warming has plagued the minds of the educated world since it first became known. However, because of the doubt that many people have about its very existence and the uncertainty that the popular media has promoted by capitalizing on this doubt, the problem has not been properly addressed. Although all scientific evidence points towards the fact that global warming is the lead cause of a potentially destructive climate shift the likes of which has never been seen before, much of the media tends to display opposing perspectives in hopes of getting the attention of – and, in the process, selling their products and services to – the populace.

Lights Out For Earth Hour

We all live in different places in the world on the planet we call, Earth. Earth has been around for many many years, but it wasn’t until recently that scientists are realizing that things need to be done to stabilize our planet. If you haven’t noticed, weather is changing and in some places like where I live (California), it is getting hot during the seasons where we’re suppose to get rain or wind. Some of you lucky folks are getting snow, but way too much snow during this time of the year. We’re the ones that are impacting the world causing these climate changes and the future of our planet is just inevitable if nothing is done to stop this mayhem.

Defining The Laws Of Gravity, Or Is It?

Ramblings, Science 8 Comments »

I’m sure everyone had a wonderful Christmas and I sure did, but for many of us that are students, we still look forward for the rest of the Christmas break (yea, I know how you’re feeling). Since most of us students will go partying, hang out with friends or family, or go to Disneyland (like my wife and I), I’m sure you’re still able to squeeze some time out to define the laws of gravity. Before I start, I can say that you and I is no Isaac Newton, but we can add something to his work. What I’m about to discuss is not only creepy, but it’s going to change the way you think and maybe push you to visit one of these locations.

Gravity hills is what people call these locations that are placed all over the US. Names like “haunted hill”, “magnetic hill”, or “anti-gravity hill” also places into this picture. Many believe that there really are ghosts present to perform tasks that pushes certain things upwards, but is it true? People that visit gravity hills usually test their car, so that’s what I’m going to base it on. There are dozens of these spots all over the United States and finding these spots shouldn’t be a problem if you just search Google. Haven’t you guys ever wanted to feel how gravity is, but didn’t have the money to afford going into space? Well, you can basically experience it now, but with a car instead.

gravity-hills-217-x-143.jpgResearchers actually tested these gravity hills and realized that they’re all optical illusions that make downhill slopes look like they’re going uphill. What does that mean you say? It basically means that your eyes are playing tricks on you in thinking that the gravity hill is going uphill when it is in fact going down. This is what causes cars to roll or any type of item you test. Although researchers experimented on the gravity hills, many still believe there is supernatural forces at work.

Some of these locations actually have stories behind them, which causes people to think there are really ghosts. If you do some research on Google, you’ll find background information of the location you used. Maybe you guys should come down to Los Angeles to visit me and check out what haunted stuff we offer.

Led By Robots, You Might Finally Lose Roaches

Ramblings, Science 5 Comments »

Many of you probably don’t see much of these things around your house, but you’re bound to see it a least once every week. Cockroaches are long living insects that can even live for days without their heads. Little do we know that these insects might even be living in our walls, in our rooms, and maybe on our beds. Wherever it is, it doesn’t do any harm to us, but seeing these things walking around disgusts most of us.

I’m also sorry if the header pic disgusts some of you because it certainly does to my wife and I. WE HATE BUGS!!

roach-interacting.jpgScientists have discovered a new way to work around these roach problems that some of us may have in our house. Scientists in Lausanne, Switzerland, have successfully tested the robot roach, InsBot, in these roach colonies. InsBot stands for “insect-like robot” (what a great name right? LOL), which mimics the roaches’ smell and movements to the point where the robot is considered one of their own homies.

“InsBot is green and about the size of a matchbox. It’s equipped with six two-dimensional colour cameras, two tactile antennae, a vibration sensor and a light sensor to detect when a cockroach is present - a difficult task because cockroaches are brown and tend to live in dark environments.”

roach-cartoon.jpgMost roaches dislike the dark, so therefore we don’t see them much except at night. The scientists that work with the InsBot decided to use the robot to lead the roaches to a lighted room, rather than the a dark area. To their amazement, the roaches actually followed the robot due to companionship.

I’m sure some of you may have heard of these type of robots being made in the past, but they weren’t successful do the the size. The Insbot is the future and it seems like it’s working very well. The main reason for scientists experimenting with these type of robots is because they’re planning to move onto bigger projects. These type of projects are going to involve animals and could eventually control the animals’ behavior. With the Insbot, infestation in houses can be relieved easily.

“The ultimate goal of the project is to gain a better understanding of how animals interact to create a sort of collective intelligence. It may lead to innovative forms of artificial intelligence. I’m hoping it leads to more influence over pests.”

So I wonder who’s going to purchase these and use them in their house? I’m sure you’re going to have to put in a hefty amount because these things don’t come cheap.
