I must admit that I tend to look up to a lot of big entrepreneur names out there like John Chow, the Facebook guy, and that guy that created the million dollar homepage. These entrepreneurs are the ones that made it big and became a figure of the Internet because of their success. Each one did something different and that’s what made them significant. Of course there are a lot more successes that have been accomplished by others over the years, but naming all of them would just be out of the question. From real life sales success to making a few million dollars from a website, these huge accomplishments that send average persons into early retirement just isn’t stopping them from continuing their work.
Now I wonder where all these millionaires or retired from 9-5 job entrepreneurs go when they decide to continue working as a retired person? The blogosphere has just recently taken a huge jump in activity in 2007 and it’s still growing at a upward pace. Since a blog provides a lot of content for daily Internet surfers or regular readers, all the money is there waiting to be taken.
Once one of these entrepreneurs decide to open a blog, it would be pretty simple to gain huge popularity, huge traffic, and loyal readers. When you’re famous, you’re pretty much famous forever. Similar to being famous, if you’ve made huge success through something, you would most likely get all the attention once again when you start a new business or should I say blog.
There pretty much won’t be any marketing if you’re famous and you decide to start blogging. You can practically just start a business and bring in clients without doing much work. To tell you the truth, I absolutely don’t know what you would get from these big entrepreneurs. Do you think you’re going to become successful by learning from them or could you do it yourself?
Most of us bloggers are looking up to big entrepreneurs, but have you ever asked yourself why you are becoming a follower to their work? I totally think that some big entrepreneurs teach bullshit on their blog because they know nothing about their field of work. Most of these entrepreneurs scored their popularity from a “fluke”, which probably got them a million dollars with the chance of fame.
For example, I’m going to talk about Alex Tew, the creator of that Million Dollar Homeage. I agree that he is a great successor by coming up with the idea of selling pixels to net $1 million, but what if he was to open up a blog on internet marketing. Do you actually believe that he would be able to teach us a thing or two about making money online? Sure, he made $1 million in less than a year, but what would he be able to teach us besides something related to his million dollar project?
You’re now probably wondering why I am talking about all this crap about the big names out there. If you think about it for second, you would realize that I’m trying to point out that no blogger should have to learn from a bigger blogger just because he/she is famous in the blogosphere. I agree that they’re a lot more experienced in their field, but most of these bloggers just come through by being popular. If a blog is popular, you’re more than likely going to call them your mentor or inspiration, but I totally don’t understand why this is done.
Any blogger, including new, can teach us things that are much more valuable than any other blogger. I believe that content comes just from the brain of any blogger and it can be taught to any other blogger. Most of the time, when we arrive at a small blog that is trying to explain a topic, we would just turn the other way thinking it is useless. I believe that small blogs are the ones that actually bring more interesting content to the blogosphere with a lot more valuable information rather than the bigger blogs.
It’s pretty funny how a blogger tends to work very dedicated in the beginning of the blogging venture, but once fame hits, everything starts to change. When you’re a popular blogger, you could pretty much write about crap and you’ll get followers. Where is the education in that?
Do you learn from biggies?

I did learn that if you are not a biggie and drop your content and quality like John Cow did then you are screwed. Once he decided to sell johncow dot com he definitely lost interest and it showed in his alexa and subscribers count.. now there is a new guy at the helm, go and check the stats , the new johncow is flying….

Yup, if you just show a little lack of blogging, you would definitely see a drop.

I learn from the biggies and the smallies too (now we have new vocabs! i actually prefer smallfries though, no offence).
If you only follow the probloggers you will not have access to smaller pieces of news. The internet is so huge now, no one person can keep track of everything and every news, so the best you could do is to diversify your browsing habits, trying to absorb as much as you can each time.
Seriously, being successful on the internet depends on a lot of factors, someone with not a so brilliant idea can be successful is the time is right, while another person with better idea may fail if the timing is wrong. There’s also factors like networking, marketing, how much investments one puts in etc.
To answer Mike’s question, maybe we can apply this wise word - Absorb the good things and not the bad things

Haha, you’re very correct that smaller blogs have all the interesting news for us to read
The blogosphere is a lot harder now and that’s why some bloggers don’t reach success no matter how hard they try.
-Mike
I never follow most of the big money makers as in the beginning i tried similar ideas to their by following them well, but later found that its waste of time.
I remember i said somewhere that the biggies just tell how they make money but never would share the real thing of how to make money very well from a single project.

Mike, I believe its like that with everything. New musical artists or bands start out making music for the music. But pretty soon, when fame hits, they make the music for the money and the music ends up being crap. There are however, a few exceptions, and those are the biggies that I learn from.

I Agree a lot with the last few lines.
I’ve seen many bloggers who have attained fame and now regularly just keep posting crap. Needless to say its far away from from MMO niche, I believe in subscribing to blogs - Big and Small
I do learn but seldom apply it (even though I’m aware of it) but from the small blogger you can find priceless info and knowledge sometimes…

Smaller bloggers are new to the community and know of all the new problems, so newer articles are brought up

Agree with many of your comments Mike. Guys like Chow can talk about the sh*t they had this morning and they’ll get upwards of 80 comments, from the sheep that follow him, like “great to hear that John” like they actually have a friendship going on there. It’s a one way friendship at best and the sooner they realise that and start focussing their energy on creating their own content of reading guys that deliver real value the better.
The amount of times i’d read a guest post on his site and people would comment “Great post John, you’re so right” … was obvious too me they didn’t read it at all and were only trying to get a link back …. i know, i’ve done it myself.
Like Paul mentions above, the Cow has some great content on there and he is adding value to those reading. He will overtake Chow in my opinion. The guy that took over Ben’s Blogging Experiment is another example … Ben was good but this guy is taking it to that next level again.
Anyway, good post on getting people thinking …. i could continue my rant on how Chows success is over inflated and doesn’t actually span anywhere past a small niche that in the overall scheme of the internet is visited by very few people but i’ve said enough.

Some of these bloggers are taking advantage of success. As you mentioned about John Chow’s posts…it’s reflecting in his stats lately, but I wouldn’t care much about it because John is John
-Mike
p.s. I agree that the new BloggingExperiment and JohnCow is just amazing!
I think its a bit ambitious to compare John Chow to The Facebook guy…
What do you mean by that Paul?
-Mike
I agree that we should learn from the biggies. And in the process we should also learn from the mistakes that we could see in them. It’s not always that they are right or we always have to follow them since we should also depend on our own capabilities to succeed in whatever online business we want.

lets not elevate john chow beyond his real worth… facebook is a value add enterprise with millions of members… john chow is … well just john chow… have a look at danny choo with 10 times the traffic JC has… and he doesn’t take photos of his crappy dinner he had last night that bores everyone to death…

Mike,
I think the little guys need some more attention from the big dogs in the blogosphere. What I mean by this is that if they were to visit a new blog and see something good or bad maybe give some pointers. With so many people looking up to them, this would just make them that much of a role model. It just seems like we make the MMO and the whole internet a cut troat environment. Just my 2 cents.

I guess my question is why? Why do people think the world owes them something just because they’re starting out? It’s not all about being fair and giving everyone a leg up blah blah blah … outside of the internet that doesn’t happen so why should it happen online?

It looks like you are a really big fan of John Chow. When it comes to learning from the biggies, I have learn’t a lot from Darren - he has a lot of good and practical advice.

I admit…I’m a fan of Mr. Chow no matter how “non-evil” he is
-Mike
I should be lying if I tell you I don’t learn from the biggies. But that doesn’t mean I turn my back towards newbies.I love content not their reputation.Luckily or unluckily, biggies are those who provide good content.
In fact, one of the main strategies of improving one’s blogging skills lies in seeing what the giants are doing. One of tips to advance in your niche is to follow biggies in your niche…see what they are neglecting and make them your priority!!!!!!!.Head your way to success!.
