As I’ve mentioned before, comments are very important factors to a blog because it allows communication indirectly to the blog owner. I sometimes piss in my pants when I see a comment from a popular blogger because it makes you feel whoozy inside knowing that your message got out through the blogosphere. It’s just amazing of what comments can do to a blogger…can you say orgasm? I know I’m kinda sick for thinking of that, but comments really does make a blogger go wild.
From blogger to blogger, do you ever wonder if your readers are really reading your published posts? It’s really interesting to know if your readers or visitors are really reading your posts. Neil Duckett actually brought this point up to me and after putting in some thought, I realize it really is true.
How many comments do you average on each of your published posts? For Bloggin-Ads, it averages around 10-15 per post, but that doesn’t really matter since comments is not what boosts the blog up in popularity because your content is. I’m sure you’ve heard of the term “Content Is King” and it is pretty much true. Do a search on Google and I’m sure you will find tons of blog content related posts. I’m not going to bore you with what kind of content to write about, but I’m going to discuss the type of action you receive when you publish one of your posts.
Lets just say this…we’re not a John Chow and we’re definitely not a Problogger, but don’t feel discouraged there because blogging takes time. John and Problogger makes things look so easy when any type of published post on their blog receives a few thousand unique visitors, pageviews, and anywhere from 30-80 comments per post. If you have thought about it not being fair that they receive so much comments and you don’t, you’re absolutely in the right position.
These big bloggers are receiving comments for 3 reasons.
- They’re popular
- They’re popular
- They provide great content
There are exceptions with some commentators just returning a comment as a favor, but I don’t think these are realistic when you try to figure out how many of your readers comment on your post with a comment relating to the topic.
So what if you’re not considered a popular blogger, but you’re getting a whole lot of comments. That may mean that your content is really good, but if if it is in fact really good, you would be a popular blog in the blogosphere. No, I don’t mean only being popular in the Entrecard crowd. What I mean by this is if your comments all lead back to a blog running the Entrecard widget, you’re not known in the rest of the blogosphere. Entrecard members tend to comment on one of the popular blogs no matter what type of gibberish is being published, so that goes back to the point if commentators comment on you only as a comment or as a few realistic sentences that relates back to the post.
How do you know if your readers are only commenting? There are a few ways to check for this and I’ll list it below:
- You publish a guest post, but the commentator says “Great post, yournamehere” instead of to the guest poster.
- You’re running a “DoFollow” commenting system, which gives a backlink.
- You have the Top Commentator plugin that gives a backlink.
- There’s some controversy being stirred up in your commenting area.
- You’re using Entrecard (popular or not).
- You’re in some type of group that reciprocate comments. Similar to the “U Drop I Follow” system of Entrecard.
After reading that list, you should get a good feeling towards if your comments are actually comments. This brings me to the main point, which is if your commentators are reading your posts. Bloggers like John Chow or Darren Rowse receives comments like “Great Post”, “I like this post”, or “Great job!”, but do you believe those are actual comments? A lot of commentators are only commentators, which means that they don’t actually read the post itself.
A true commentator actually reads your published post and reply with a comment relating back to the post.
Do your comments seem fishy?

The comments on my blog, for the most part, seem pretty legitimate. I get a few that seem like they just read the title and decided to leave a comment, but most of them seem genuine. A lot of comments on John Chow’s blog, however, aren’t so genuine. I notice that with a lot of the reviews that I do on there, you’ll find tons of comments that say something like “Great review John!”

Great Post John……LOL just kidding Mike.
I agree with you very much. I have to filter out comments all the time as I get a lot of those “Great Post” deals. This post has brought a new light to my eyes about those Spammers. Thanks for the Info you have been providing, it has been helping me a lot.

That’s an awesome article. And don’t feel bad for admitting you have an orgasm when the big boys leave a comment. I someone like John Chow or ProBlogger left a comment on one of my blogs, I’d probably pass out.
I always try to leave meaningful comments on a post. I don’t get a lot of comments on my blogs, but I do get a few and I appreciate them. Most of them, anyway. The ones that kill me are when you write a post about something totally understandable and you get a comment that says, “Some parts of your article were hard to understand, will have to do more research”. Umm, ok. I got one of those on a post I wrote for my mom’s birthday. LOL
Anyway, I’ll just keeping working to get as many comments as you do, and hope for the best.
Great post Mike!
(That’s all I have to say. I’ll let you try to figure out if I read the whole article or not.)

I find only other bloggers comment, but they also wont pick your adsense etc… so who do you on your site? bloggers who comment and don’t give you revenue? or non-commenter’s who click your ads on the way out? Both is the correct answer I assume, but I want more non-commenter’s
Food for thought, thanks Mike.

Good post Mike.. I actually see many a times in John Chow’s blog that people comment on guest posts mentioning John’s name in it, although John has nothing to do with the post.

I just have my own blog running wordpress and in comparison with my other blog on blogspot, I think self hosted WordPress seems to get unnecessary or spammy trackback or even spam comments. Anyone care to differ here?
Meanwhile if there is any blogger, famous or not, tries to comment something like “I like your post. END”, then I will seriously consider deleting the comment. However this kind of comment is hard to determine, it borders on spam but you cannot be sure. As for spam, no chance for it stay up on my moderated blog hehe! (hope I am diligent enough to hunt and delete)

I agree with Paul. You can never tell if the one with the comment “Good job” or “I like your site” actually means it. But since I enabled the commenting in my blog gives everyone the right to make a comment even if it’s just a “Thanks for a Nice Post” comment. They visited my site gave me a thank you and probably clicked an ad. If the comment seems fishy, I really don’t care as long as it’s not from a robot spammer and it’s not full of links.
Cheers Mike.

Its glad to hear with this topic mike…You right I think some of the commentators are just commentators where in they comment on you but it’s not related on the post…Some of them are spamming your post especially those post who has a big PR..:D

In my blog, I really feel happy when someone appreciates my blog and leaves a long comment. however, I really get pissed off when someone leaves a comment that is very much different from the topic of my post (as what Mike said) especially if the comment is an invitation to join this or that…I just hope that people would be more responsible in their comments and that they should only post whenever they really want to.

In my blog, I have all genuine comments because I have the same bloggers/online buddy that came to my blog and comment…and I’m not famous, so no bogus comments..
Comments! I don’t get too many comments on my blog. I probably haven’t gotten too many of late because I have not been very active. On the most, they are legitimate. I do get a bit of junk sent to me via my contact link.
A lot of the comments I get are from the same people and they sometimes give me a bit of valuable info that only add to the post.

I’ve seen a slew of sploggers posting lately with things like “I really like your blog design, look forward to reading more” or “you’ve got a great writing style” - then of course you visit their site & realize what they’re up too. I like to think most of my comments are well thought out and relevant…I may not get comments on everything I write, but for the most part the ones I do get are always genuine

I hate it when people left a comment such as “nice blog! please visit mine”… I believe these people left the comments for the sake of getting you to come over to their blogs…

@ shaxx and chetan… hmmm I am guilty of backlinks… hehehe. But I think that backlinks should only be used if you think that you have a post that coould really help to make things clearer on the post that you commented. Meaning…use backlinks if you have a similar or very related topicin your own blog to that of the post of the blogger where you commented to

I can’t say a great post can I?.But still it is…..
This is a point of time where bloggers are attracting comments,be it by holding contests or by giving out links. Now,comments have become a prestige point for bloggers. You shouldn’t be surprised if I say that a blogs value also depends upon the number of comments…:)
But finally what matters is a reader who reads and leaves a meaningful comment adding more value to the post…
