After receiving an idea from an e-mail from this guy, I receive yet another one from him. This time I’m going to introduce you guys to Brandon. He’s actually a great guy that I just got into communication with, so hopefully you guys could check out his blog. Anyways, today’s post is going to be on a very important topic that covers basically your whole blogging career. We all know that to begin blogging, we bloggers need to come up with some interesting content to post about, but what if that content comes out wrong? There could be countless reasons why one of your published posts would turn away readers.
It’s actually pretty simple for any blogger to just type something up in Wordpress or in a document file. Usually, when I have an idea for a post, the content just flows out of my brain, which allows me to start typing. I’m pretty sure any of you bloggers do think of ideas first, but it starts coming out with ease. The only problem now is if your visitors or subscribers are actually going to read your post. If the quality of your content just sucks, you’re not going to gain much attention.
But if you think about it closely, the quality of your content doesn’t always matter. If you take a look at bloggers like John Chow or Shoemoney, you should already know that they don’t really provide much in depth details on how they’re making money. All I see on their blogs are ramblings about how good this entrée at the restaurant was or how good the UFC match was. There’s no offense to them, but they’re making over $30,000 a month, so they don’t give a shit. Even though they tend to ramble, have some of you bloggers realized that you guys still read their posts? The gibberish is still very much understandable and doesn’t that mean that they don’t have much spelling or grammar problems?
When Brandon contacted me this time around, he mentioned that I had small spelling and grammar errors. I do agree with his statement because my English isn’t too well even though I’m born here in the United States. English wasn’t my first language because Chinese was, but schools only teach English, so I do admit that I’m doing quite poorly in the field of writing.
I’m currently still attending school with my wife and we just recently finished our English classes, but that doesn’t make us good writers or anything. One thing that we were taught to do is proofread everything we write. This is a blog here and writing these posts is just like writing mini-essays, which means proofreading is required. I have done it before on my previous posts, but I have gotten very lazy and writing the posts is all I do. But it actually made me rethink if proofreading posts is absolutely necessary in the blogging
business?
Not everyone is fluent in English and understand all the grammar problems. Take a look at bloggers that are blogging in English when their background is not American, but Asian, Indian, or African? I know there are more races, but my point is if we’re really required to proofread a post when we write something that we could read legibly.
Proofreading is basically going over what you have written or having someone else do it for you. The results are usually a better written article, but I disagree with the use of proofreading. I personally think that proofreading isn’t really needed as long as your visitors, readers, and subscribers understand what you’re trying to say. Nothing has to be professional and I just try to be myself when I’m writing these posts. Those small grammar and spelling mistakes that we make as bloggers is just something that happens. When you’re thinking about something, while you’re writing about a completely different something, you may end up putting in the wrong word or interpretation ![]()
The good thing about proofreading your posts is that it allows your readers to know more about your professionalism, which I lack a bit. My blog is not really a business thing, so I hardly care about proofreading, but if my blog becomes something like Maki’s DoshDosh blog, I may have to rethink things. The key is as long as your readers understand what you’re trying to discuss, you’re pretty much safe and don’t have to worry about fixing much mistakes.
Do you proofread your posts?

Yes I do. I copy my articles to MS word to check for spelling and grammar errors. I concern about it but I don’t spend the most of my time proofreading.
I think it’s still an accountable part of publishing a post since sometimes I’m bothered people writing something like “their is a mad cow inside the barn”

I spend about 10 minutes proofreading a medium sized post. But if I don’t do that, I will have a lot of errors.

I always proofread, i learned the hard way about that. One, if not the first comment i got when promoting my board was that business wasn’t spelled right.
I’m kind of disappointed with this post. Profreading is essential. You are basically disrespecting your readers, and the words you wrote, and even yourself, by just letting something go out like that. I understand that people are going to have comma slices and things like that, but to have a post littered with spelling errors, or the there, their, they’re type of errors is totally inexcusable. As a reader, once I start finding multiple errors I’m leaving because clearly the writer doesn’t take themselves seriously enough.
See, even my post there is full of gramatical and syntax errors, but that’s the thing. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but you should at least re-read your post and make sure there isn’t misspelled words, that it makes sense, and is legible. You mention Dosh, Dosh, to get to that level you have to take yourself seriously enough and give your work the respect it deserves. You have good content here, don’t do it a disservice.

Agree with you to an extent but I should say “Think again!!”.
Your readers might still be happy with your posts but little uncomfortable with your grammatical mistakes. You lose a bit of professionalism in their mind. You might have got the feeling because very little complain about your errors(In fact there aren’t many….)
Just because other giants don’t care much about it…..you shouldn’t leave it!.Successful blogging starts with giving your readers what others are neglecting or just not touching….
Hope you understand!!

Hmm I agree that you need to proofread your posts. I personally read again before posting a blog entry so that I would at least check on those words, grammar and spelling that I wrongly used. I believe that quality posts need to be at least written in accordance to the grammar and spellig rules as what we have learned in our English class. However, the we also have to braoden our minds that not all bloggers are good in english. Sometimes we also have to look at their content since some bloggers who are not very well in english may give out even substantial facts.

Proofreading is sometimes forgotten when you post and I admit it.

one of my greatest concerns is whether people who came over to read are able to do so and therefore, proofreading is a necessity for me…

I have a double standard on this one Mike - When I read posts from bloggers whose second language is English, I forgive what they obviously can’t help, and in fact enjoy the occasional unintentional humor; but I apply a different measure to those who know better but don’t bother to check the errors.
In the end I believe we do the best we can, whatever our skill level - any less than that is a put-down to our readers. I won’t insult you by offering you any less than my best work.

I just thought that those who use english as their first language also need to proofread the same way as those who utilize english as their second language. After all many english speakers are also not very good when it comes to grammar rules and stuffs.

It is good to proofread, but no matter how many times i do it
i still notice some mistakes after posting.I don’t take it to heart if the blogger is from non English speaking country
the content of the site is more important to me.

I don’t deliberately proofread my posts, but before pressing the publish button, I will scroll through the post, give a glance or two, hoping to catch any obvious spelling mistakes and bad sentence structures.
We have all heard before about the beauty of a first draft, where one will be able to express oneself creatively and expressively in their first draft writing. If you are too critical about what you wrote, you will end up altering a large chunk of your posts, which will produce something very different from what you were feeling and wanting to write originally. So, just do enough of proofreading, don’t be too critical, anything excessive is bad

I proofread as I write and also before I publish my posts. It is a writer’s responsibility to himself and to the community that reads his articles.
A person’s habit of not proofreading is a reflection of the person’s lifestyle. It shows how much a person respects himself and how the person values his work.

I spend my time re-reading it once or twice. Unfortunately most of the time it’ll go up with a few edits still needing to be made.
I go back and check it out but mostly looking for typing errors not so much to proofread it but I guess its the same huh? I really never thought about it till I read your posts about this topic. I myself am HIspanic and english also is second language but I have always been able to relate to other people who spoke english without problems and I feel I can relate to them in my posts as well altho I will admit Im not good at plcing the comma, and periods in all the right places and there or is it thier?? anyway Im not good with these type of words either but I still feel I come across with what I want to say to my readers and Im always open for their comments which in them they can give me constructive critisim if they wish to do so for I always tell them to be sure and leave their comments and speak their minds and tell it like it is.. I do want to say this to you I have read your posts and for engish being your second language you write awfully good and better then those blogs who earn the big bucks and say nothing and use two dollar words you do much better I classifiy you as using ten dollar words in your post and everything you write about is perfectly understandable and very well worded in good english. I give you a thumbs up. Keep up your good work.
English is also a second language to me. but i think I can write/express it better in english than Filipino (the Philippines’ national language which is mostly Tagalog-based).
Profreading is essential but it does not have to be perfect as we are limited by what we know. If one has money, he can always hire an editor.

Yes, we need to proof read our post but if it is a short post, you normally don’t bother to proof read your post. I do my proof read to improve my writing because English is my third language.

Mike,
It’s funny because I wrote a post a few days ago about why people should type their posts into a Word document BEFORE posting lol!
But I “try” to proofread as much as I can but it all depends on which blog and if I’m in a hurry. On DatMoney, since it’s more of a business type blog then I would say yes. If you don’t proofread on a business type blog then I’m not sure how people will take you seriously.
