Owning More Than One Blog May Turn Bad

multi-tasking

In a blogger’s life, we love to multi-task.  I’m not sure why, but it’s great to work at home on your blog, but at the same time chat to your buddies and surf the Internet.  That’s the great thing about the Internet and it is for multi-taskers that love to work at home, but work at the highest potential.  Since I’m a blogger, I’ll only be talking about blogging.  Some of you work very very hard on your blog just to market it out to the rest of the blogosphere.  Without work, you’re just wasting your time because you probably won’t be noticed as much.

Now that you know that working on a blog is not a simple job, have you ever thought about owning more than one blog?  Some crazy bloggers like Garry Conn own not just 2-3 blogs, but 20-30 blogs and growing.  The amount of time spent on one blog is hard enough for me, but some bloggers are simply amazing when it comes to multi-tasking and working on other blogs.

The usual reason to own more than one blog would be to have more than one income stream on a completely different domain, but there are a few bloggers that are definitely in it for the action :-P .  If you decide to go with the money making route, owning more than one blog would indeed earn you more money because of the higher amount of advertising area you would be able to fill up.

Owning more than one blog may seem great because of all the new opportunities that would be given to you.  You could form different topics and niches on each blog, which would take off the limit of your creativity.  You may even be able to vent on one of the new blogs without having to worry about losing traffic or having hate comments.  All these things sound great, but there are a whole lot of problems when you decide to open up a new blog.

Lose Motivation

Motivation for blogging is basically how you approach blogging in your everyday life.  To run a great blog, you would have to be motivated to write the content itself.  The main thing about owning a blog is the content that is being portrayed to readers and viewers.  Having more than one blog would move your motivation from blog to blog.  One day you would decide you would like to vent, so you would probably type up a small post on your own personal little blog.  The other days, you decide you would like to write a full-length article on how to make money online.  Unless you’re superman or Garry Conn, you’re probably going to lack motivation to write good content on one or more of your blogs…depending on how many you own.

Lose Dedication

Being dedicated to blogging is not as easy as some of you may think. LOL.  You would be amazed at the amount of dedication I have to put into Bloggin-Ads.  Not to mention Bloggin-Ads is the only blog I own.  I have to make sure that each day I give myself enough time to read new blog posts on my blog reader and enough time to type my own post.  I make sure that I’m able to have a post by a specific time period or else it would disorganize the order.  You’re not going to be able to dedicate yourself to a blog when you own more than one.  I’m just going to leave it at that.

busy workload

Work Load

If you think about it, would you be able to carry more than you could handle?  One blog’s work is already a lot because you would have to type posts every day or one every few hours (depending on your post frequency).  Having more than one blog just means you would need to double the work on yourself.  I personally would say that if you already struggle keeping one blog alive, you should not go on to a new blog.

Marketing Focus

Blog owners know how difficult it is to market a blog out.  It takes a whole lot of time to be able to build a certain amount of traffic.  If you own more than one blog, it would be difficult to know which blog you would need to market.  If you stop or slow down on marketing one, you would lose quite an amount of traffic.  Your marketing focus would be scattered as you would love to see all your sites grow at the same time.

In the end, owning more than one blog is just like owning more than one business.  Owning your own business would be hard enough to dedicate yourself to, so owning more than one would just break things apart.  Again, some of you may be able to do it, but the majority do not realize that owning more than one blog is just going to cause you to give up.

How many blogs do you own?

this blog is dead on accurate. I own 7 blogs and work full time 40 hours a week, and the work load is getting to me really bad.

Wait, which blog is dead…mine? :P I experienced working about 20 hours a week last week with my blog on the other hand. It didn’t work out so great :(

You’re making the assumption that each additional blog is a social blog. Social blogs always require a lot of work. Blogs that are set up for other reasons, that don’t have to be updated daily/weekly, require very little work to maintain.

You’re right and I totally didn’t think about that. However, when it comes down to the work load and the time being spent, owning more than one blog does switch around the time and focus.

I have 5 blogs right now. 2 of them are thriving, 1 is doing well but the other 2 are pretty neglected! I’ve figured out a way to post a whole week’s worth of posts in an hour or two, so it’s not that part that is difficult - it’s the traffic & promotion part that is neglected!

If you’re able to do a whole week’s post in 1-2 hours, you’re doing GOOD! My posts usually take a hour to two each :P

If you’re going to quote numbers, make sure they are accurate. I have over 100 blogs. ;)

Otherwise great post. See RT’s comment that pretty much speak my thoughts.

Just wanted to give a bare minimum of what you own :P

Yea, RT’s comment made me rethink a bit too. I guess I should have done a bit more research. LOL.

It usually matters on what kind of site you are running. Social sites tend to take more time than easier to run sites like proxies and other scripts that can handle by themselves. But this is true too because I do this too, i run several sites and it is not easy…..

100 blogs? How is that possible? But in the other hand, is you are a pro-blogger you can have over 100 blogs…but mainly what you say here is correct to those who have many blogs but lack of time to update or manage it…and I’m one of it…guilty as charge…

I have 5 sites that I was trying to keep active. I have since dropped it down to three. I thought that having a site in each niche was needed but really one site with a few different categories would have covered everything.

I think it depends on how you manage your time and dived it to your blog..:-)

I got 2 dotcoms, and 4 blogspots. If blogging is a business, then it’s like running a conglomerate or a multi-departmental, multi-product company. It multiplies one’s earning potential.

If the blogs are not producing, then these are just non-performing assets, a burden to the owner if maintained in the long run.

Running 2 Blogs only because I’m working for almost 9 to 10 hours somewhere else as well. But I’m thinking of working 6 hours at the place I work so I can give more time to blogging and eventually become a pro-blogger..

any ideas? if I should go for it or not?

Mike, my posts also take more than one hour, maybe two. It all depends on how much research I have to do, to make it a great post. There are indeed blogs that don`t need regular updates, those blogs don`t interact with their readers a lot, this is time saving, but not a good idea to run 7 blogs, unless you hire people.

I currently own 2 blogs. The other one wasn’t generating much money and is quite “complete”

I really only have 1 “social” blog, on the other hand, I have several other “blogs” which are really niche sites. The other blogs really only use a blogging platform to make updates easy.
That said, I agree with you that many (especially me) can not use time wisely while working at home and spread what effort we use too thin. Focusing on one blog till it is successful and really putting the effort into it that is needed is the key to success.

I have 2 blogs and also feel that it would be way too much work if I added one more blog even though I would like to do it. If I decided to go down that route then I would probably hire someone in India to write posts for that blog.
