Proofreading Posts - Follow Up

Blogging, Everything Add comments

follow up

Just yesterday I published a post on how bloggers really don’t need to proofread posts, but today, I’m taking all the comments I received and including it in this post. I didn’t really think that I would receive so much attention when I mentioned that proofreading posts isn’t really needed, but boy was I wrong. It seems like a lot of visitors and readers are turned off by spelling and grammar errors. Now my post yesterday didn’t elaborate as much, but I just left it at the following statement, “as long as a post is understandable, proofreading should not be needed as much as everyone believes.”

It was quite interesting seeing all the replies I received yesterday on my “proofreading” post and I do urge you to check it out if you haven’t yet. A majority of bloggers have actually been proofreading their posts to catch the eye of readers rather than to turn it away. What I have included below are a few very good points that were in my comments. If I didn’t take your comment, don’t feel discouraged. I simply just took the ones that allowed me to respond to. The replies under each comment are not directly towards the commentator, but towards everyone.

Nick -

” Proofreading is essential. You are basically disrespecting your readers, and the words you wrote, and even yourself, by just letting something go out like that. I understand that people are going to have comma slices and things like that, but to have a post littered with spelling errors, or the there, their, they’re type of errors is totally inexcusable. As a reader, once I start finding multiple errors I’m leaving because clearly the writer doesn’t take themselves seriously enough. “

” You mention Dosh, Dosh, to get to that level you have to take yourself seriously enough and give your work the respect it deserves. You have good content here, don’t do it a disservice. “

Nick’s 2 comments were the ones that actually caught my attention the most. It could be because it was quite harsh (i didn’t take it wrong, but he apologized :-) ) or it could be long, but I have totally taken his 2 comments into thought. I guess those simple errors that Nick mentioned happens quite often and are totally inexcusable. If any blogger including myself decides to get up to the level of Maki at Dosh Dosh, I believe that I must proofread my own posts because providing great content isn’t the only thing a blogger needs. Good content with good spelling and grammar forms the real perfect content…with exception to some pictures :-P

Rhys -

” When I read posts from bloggers whose second language is English, I forgive what they obviously can’t help, and in fact enjoy the occasional unintentional humor; but I apply a different measure to those who know better but don’t bother to check the errors.

In the end I believe we do the best we can, whatever our skill level - any less than that is a put-down to our readers. I won’t insult you by offering you any less than my best work. “

This comment is what kind of related to what my previous post was all about. As bloggers, we don’t need to do anything perfect since no one is exactly perfect. Doing the best we can is all that is needed even if your first or second language is English. What is said here is that as long as you do your best and try to make the best out of whatever you’re trying to post, you’re doing things the correct way.

Louis -

” Yes I do. I copy my articles to MS word to check for spelling and grammar errors. I concern about it but I don’t spend the most of my time proofreading.

The time spent on a post should be split into its own schedule and if you tend to proofread your posts, all the time shouldn’t be put into it. The time should all go into what you’re writing to write for your readers.

Rohit -

” Just because other giants don’t care much about it…..you shouldn’t leave it!.Successful blogging starts with giving your readers what others are neglecting or just not touching…. “

The successful bloggers really don’t teach us smaller bloggers the correct way of blogging. They’re on their own little blogosphere world where caring much about what they publish on their blog is just the third factor in blogging successfully. I’m putting in a huge statement by saying that and I know there are very great bloggers out there, but bloggers like John Chow and Shoemoney are just ruining the way blogging really is suppose to be. Their blogs bring up topics that are sometimes great, but elaboration isn’t done on it. Sometimes, proofreading is needed to see where the certain parts of your posts require a little extra something.

Now after replying to all the concerns, I have realized that I have been wrong in my previous post. Not completely wrong, but I guess I turned away a few heads when I said that proofreading isn’t required for a blogger that is publishing a post. Everyone makes mistakes and but they’re usually small and excusable, but it seems like proofreading does bring out a better readable post.

Before I end this post, I would like you guys to stop by tomorrow because I’m going to bring yet another very very important up if you wish to become a successful blogger. You don’t have to make money out of it, but what I’m going to mention tomorrow is important online and off.

I always proofread my posts but at the same time, guilty for missing some errors. I always love to receive feedback though. Proofreading is very important because you’re sending a strong message to your readers that you know exactly what you’re talking about and what you send is vital information. Writing is a way of feeding the minds of your readers. I believe a reader wouldn’t want to feed on wrong info, lest, twisted writing.

I believe that as part of the decision to become a content producer, you must take care of the quality of your work. Not proofing is like the supermarket selling moldy bread - getting this stuff right is part of the process of writing, not an optional extra. Emotive topic for me and I write about it frequently, but still, nice blog and I’m glad I found it :)

Yeah!.
You were not completely wrong with the previous post and you should be happy with the response of your readers….

I was satisfied with Rhys’s comment–We should always look to give our best!!.

And thanks for your reply to my comment–yes, some of those biggies aren’t leading the blogosphere in the right way!.But still proofreading is a must so that your content doesn’t become a turnoff for readers.

Again, I apologize for coming off so harsh, but I am glad that I caught your attention. We all know that bloggers don’t have editors. That’s understood, nothing is ever going to be perfect. The best writers in the world need people to check their work and prepare it for print. The thing about proofreading is that no one is going to pat you on the back for getting it right. No one is going to notice that you don’t have errors in your work, but they will always notice when you do.

Well I think Mike has a point when he said that proofreading may not be essential as long as the post is understandable. However, I believe that even if proofreading may really not be needed but it should still be exercised since it could still increase the credibility of the blogger which I think is one of the most important things… Hmmm I’m caught in the middle…to proofread or not to proofread? hmm I think I would still go with proofreading. But just like what I stated in my previous post, proofreading may not really correct all your errors…it would just lessen them…

I separate my writing and proofreading time. When writing posts take too much time, I only spell check which is done lighting speed by MS Word

I myself am still making lots of errors especially in my spelling when I tries to type my post fast to get it out and then after its all finished I find myself still wasting time because I have to go back and correct all my typing errors that I could have avoided if I just took my time to do it right the first time. Yes believe me you are right, proof reading is needed. I know with me its a must. ( and I still do not get it right sometimes) Smile..

I just want to add that Im so glad that there ae some who do undestand about us who english is our second language but we try to do our very (sometimes I use bery best)smile! best to get our words out in good english grammer. Any way as long as you know your trying your best is what really counts, and as long as your reader knows and understands what the post you’ve written is about and your not giving them the wrong info, does a misplace comma, or period or the wrong spelling of their or there makes your post lose its quality? I think not!! and I shall continue to do the best that I can, and catch my typying errors, when I can…

I’ve sometimes hastily posted something then it just kills me if i don’t go back in and edit out the mistakes …. maybe even several times before i find them all. Pays to proof read a post.

Proofreading is necessary. I do it but sometime some error remains in my post and when I read it after publishing, I feel bad. One blogger reviewed my blog and he gave me very bad reviews because of errors on my post. Now I won’t let that happen again.

This is a topic that all bloggers big or small should think on…a good topic with a good language and no wrong spelling does intrigue reader to read more…I know this because I know a blogger who like to write a very long post but surprisingly, I have manage to read it because I’m a blogger who like my post simple, short and precise…well done Mike for this long-thought post…
