Education is a very important thing in our society and although I’m Chinese, I admit that a lot of this problem is caused by Chinese people being so smart. I remember when I was in 8th grade, I started seeing immigrants from China coming to America to become a citizen. I don’t mention Hong Kong because immigrants from Hong Kong usually move to Canada. As it reached my Sophomore of high school, immigrants from China grew a huge percentage and I remember hearing that schools were starting to deny new students from out of the country. Anyways, back to my point here. So Chinese people are suppose to be very smart because of the higher and faster education in China, so what happens is that the levels of education raise higher than ever and acceptances in higher colleges become more difficult. Before you say I’m assuming things, stop yourself because these are facts :-P

Now that the levels are raised and it is much more difficult to get into a college of your choice, students would have to study their ass off to get into a decent career. Some students including myself just aren’t that talented and that forces us to stay a bit behind, but some just drop out of school. Without education, there won’t be much you can turn to unless you depend on your parents and somehow make a million bucks. Other than that, if you also don’t make the correct financial choices, you will become homeless.

The Homeless

If you commute to work, you would probably see a homeless man or woman on the side of the freeway exit or the middle island of the street. No matter where you are, there are homeless persons asking for some spare change, a chance for a job, or even a temporary home. There’s pretty much nothing to do but to sit by the side of drive-by cars and ask for money.

Homeless - the condition and societal category of people who lack housing and food, usually because they cannot afford a regular, safe, and adequate shelter.

Homeless regulars would usually bring a cup and a sign with text written on it. They range anywhere from “Homeless, Need Money” to “Poor, Need A Loving Home”. No matter what the signs say, they’re usually looked down upon by average people. A lot of people don’t even know how that person in the corner asking for money became a homeless man or woman. Sometimes, homeless persons are more educated than the ones with a college degree.

Education

homeless educationThere are many reasons why a person becomes homeless. Most of the time, the reason is because there is a lack of money, which results in no shelter to live under. As mentioned on the news before, the numbers come in that a high percentage of homeless persons are highly educated with a college degree.

Here’s a list of average college students’ salary that is taken from Money.Cnn.com:

Information sciences and systems: $47,182
Economics/finance: $44,588
Civil engineering: $46,084
Chemical engineering: $56,269
Accounting: $44,928
Business administration/management: $41,155
History: $33,071
Mechanical engineering: $51,732
Electrical engineering: $53,500
Psychology: $30,369
Computer science: $50,744
Political science and government: $33,094
English: $31,385
Sociology: $31,096

Now what does that amount mean to us and the homeless? Although the averages were calculated back in 2006, it should still be pretty accurate or even lower now because of how society treats newly graduates and students in colleges. It has been proven that some college graduates with degrees usually encounter some sort of personal event or problem that leads them to become a homeless. Add to that the United States “UNCLE SAM” and “CREDIT” system. BBC News did a great report of this in 2002, which is 6 years ago, but again, society is probably worse now. About 50% of the homeless qualifies for having a decent education, but they’re not given a chance back into the normal life because of their image and appearance. It used to be no matter how ugly you are, fat you are, pimp-faced you are, you would still have equal chances at a job. Sure, job opportunities are suppose to be “EQUAL”, but life isn’t that easy anymore and how many of you think that some employers are still not giving equal opportunities? :-(

Money or Liquor?

Now if you were to give money to a homeless person on the streets, you would probably want to know what they do with the money. The chances are they’re going to buy some booze or get high, but that’s just the stereotypical way of thinking things. Because Hostgator already did a real life experiment on being homeless, I’m going to take some of their statistics to form an example.

blog beerSince I’m not going to ask you to become a homeless person for a day, lets imagine that you are one for now. If you were to work the corners or freeway exits for 8 hours a day, you would average a least $50 a day, but of course it depends on your “spot” and your “sign”. Of course some make even more, but if you use $50 a day and calculate it as a full-time job, you would make about $12,000 a year. Hostgator’s numbers were more inflated because only 2 hours a day was tested, but they calculated about $31,000 to $61,000 a year depending more on the apperance and sign.

Even at $250 a week, a homeless person should be able to rent a small room and buy some decent food, but why do they continue to stay on the streets? Poor decision making is the answer. If homeless men and women were to save the money earned from asking for spare change, they would be more rich than a college graduate.

I apologize if this post offended anyone. It wasn’t meant to offend, but rather to bring up a point.

“I don’t mention Hong Kong because immigrants from Hong Kong usually move to Canada. ”

Huh. Why is that, you think? I know it’s easier to get in here (I’m Canadian) and that there ar ehuge Asian comminuties in the bigger areas, but why from HK specifically? Just curious. :)

Maybe they want to. :) No home or car means less expenses. and usually when you’re that poor things actually cost more. And many of the well-educated people noted above wind up homeless not because of lack of money, but too much debt that their money can’t cover. It also takes an overwhleming amount to try and dig yourself out of the hole.

I mention HK because it is true and it has been proven. All the HK stars are coming from Cananda now, but they were either born in HK or their parents are.

Things do cost more when you’re poor, but if some money is saved, it would do wonders. It is hard to dig out of a hole, but wouldn’t it be worth it? Just my opinion.

Depends on a where abouts which country you are homeless. Here in New Zealand, we are fortunate to have Government and private help to provide emergency accommodation/housing. Though rents tend to be a significant portion of costs, and some people do end up on the streets or communal boarding homes, and perhaps personal choices become more limited…

Here in California or Los Angeles to be exact, there are accomdation/housing areas for the homeless too. I’ve actually serviced at a homeless shelter once. I wouldn’t say it is the best place to be at, but it felt good to help out.
