All of you have to agree that just this past year, 2007, blogs have been coming in from left and right including up and down. The enormous growth of people joining in on this blog trend is going to go on for many years to come until we get hit by a huge “hole” in the system. What I mean by this “hole” is scammers, hackers, and anything along those lines. I experienced those auto-surfs, hyips, and pyramid schemes, so I do know how it ends up, but it might take some time or might never happen…who knows.

With that said, there are New Year resolutions that I’m going to follow and I suggest others follow as well, but before we get to that, lets recap on what a “New Year’s Resolution” really is.

New Year’s Day

The celebration of New Year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed by the ancient Babylonians about 4,000 years ago. The beginning of spring is the logical time for a “new year” because it is the season of rebirth of planting new crops and blossoming of flowers. January 1st was just chosen by pure arbitrary and has no significance. The Babylonian celebration lasts for 11 days and the Romans continued to observe “New Year” in late March, but it soon got out of hand when different emperors messed with the dates and calendar, which brought it out of synchronization with the sun. In order for the New Year to return to its proper date, the Romans declared January 1st to be the “New Year” date.

resolution-baby.gif The use of this image of a baby on the right was to signify a new year and this tradition began in Greece around 600 BC. It was the tradition to use a baby to celebrate their God of Wine, Dionysus, by parading a baby in a basket, which represented the annual rebirth of that god as the spirit of fertility.

The Christians denounced that the baby was not Jewish, Christian, or Muslim and therefore the Christians did not like the idea of using a baby for the “New Year”. The church eventually allowed the use of a baby as the popularity grown, but it was used to symbolize the birth of Jesus.

New Years Events

  • Resolution

This tradition goes back to the ancient Babylonians and popular resolutions are usually to lose weight or to quit smoking, but there are much more. The Babylonians considered returning borrowed farm equipment as a resolution, but it can be anything a person chooses.

Here’s a government website with a list of popular New Year’s Resolutions.

  • Good Luck

It was traditionally thought that luck can be affected by what you do or eat on the first day of the year and that is why it became common for people to celebrate this day with the company of friends or family. It was once believed that the first visitor on New Year’s Day would either bring good luck or bad luck for the rest of the year. Good luck was considered meeting a tall dark-haired man. LOL!

  • Food

resolution-food.jpgTraditional New Year foods are also thought to bring luck. Many cultures believe that anything in the shape of a ring is good luck, because it symbolizes “coming full circle,” completing a year’s cycle. For that reason, the Dutch believe that eating donuts on New Year’s Day will bring good fortune.

Many parts of the U.S. celebrate the new year by consuming black-eyed peas. These legumes are typically accompanied by either hog jowls or ham. Black-eyed peas and other legumes have been considered good luck in many cultures. The hog, and thus its meat, is considered lucky because it symbolizes prosperity. Cabbage is another “good luck” vegetable that is consumed on New Year’s Day by many. Cabbage leaves are also considered a sign of prosperity, being representative of paper currency. In some regions, rice is a lucky food that is eaten on New Year’s Day.
